How FlavDex works

FlavDex helps you track what you like and avoid what you do not. You can scan a barcode, search the global FlavDex, rate items out of 5, and save notes for your own Dex.

Add or scan a food/drink item.
Rate and review it in item edit mode.
Save to add it to your Dex.

Home tab

Home gives quick access to what matters most.

Staff Recommended for promoted picks.
Rate Next for recently added items.
Your Recent Dex for your latest ratings.

Add tab

Use Add when you want to create, import, or discover items.

Scan/Add by Barcode to open an existing item or create one if missing.
Search global FlavDex and apply filters before rating.
Manually add item when barcode/search does not find it.
Browse collections and follow useful lists.

Dex tab

Dex is your personal list of rated items.

Open any item for details, linked tags, ingredients, and retailer info.
Use Edit to update ratings, notes, images, and item details.
Use Bookmark to add items to your Try List collection.
Use Sort and Filter by to narrow results quickly.

Search and filters

Search lets you switch between consumables, collections, and retailers.

Sort by supports date, name, and product type views.
Filter by supports rating, brand, tags, dietary, ingredients, storage, and more.
Retailers filters include place type, facilities/services, and dietary/lifestyle options.
Use combinations of filters to quickly build focused result lists.

Menu tab

Menu gives you account and catalog tools.

Collections: manage your lists and followed lists.
Places/Online: rate stores and view retailer menus.
Dietary, Ingredients, Brands: manage preferences and ratings.
Profile: update display name, password, and privacy settings.
Friends / News: follow people and see updates.

How can we help?

▶Getting started, sign-in & reset

Sign in with your email and password. If you’re new, create an account and agree to the Terms & Privacy before the button enables.
Reset password: tap “Forgot password?” on the sign-in screen. We’ll email a reset link that routes you back to the app after you set a new password.
Sign out: open the Menu tab → Account → Logout and confirm. You’ll need to sign in again to continue.

▶Browse & search foods

Use the Dex tab or Search for food from the Add tab to find items by name, tags, brands, and other filters.
Home tab surfaces items to rate next, recent ratings, and staff picks tailored to your activity.

▶Ratings & notes

Open a food to set My rating with the 0–5 slider (0 keeps it unset) and pick the label that best fits.
You can update your rating or clear it anytime; your changes save immediately on the detail screen.
Review how friends and the wider community have rated the item from the same page.

▶Barcode scanning & imports

From the Add tab, choose Scan/Add by Barcode and point the camera at the code.
If the barcode already exists, we’ll open that food. Multiple matches open a filtered search; brand-new codes prefill details from Open Food Facts for you to review before saving.
Add more barcodes inside a food’s details so additional sizes and prices stay linked correctly.

▶Add or edit foods

Use Manually add food item from the Add tab to submit new entries with names, brands, barcodes, tags, ingredients, cooking info, and pricing.
You can append extra barcodes and manage additional sizes/prices from the food detail editor; add at least one barcode before linking more sizes.
Follow or browse curated collections to keep track of themed lists from the Add tab.

▶Profile, privacy & friends

Update your display name, toggle public/private profile visibility, and save changes from Menu → Profile.
Change your password anytime in Profile; we’ll block mismatched or too-short entries before saving.
Find friends from Menu → Friends and browse app announcements in News. Public profiles share activity with followers; private profiles hide it.

▶Collections, friends & updates

Follow collections from the Add tab to keep curated lists handy.
Stay current with News in the Menu tab; an indicator shows when you have unread updates.
Find and manage friends from the Menu tab to see their activity when profiles are public.

▶Troubleshooting

Can’t sign in: confirm your email/password, check connectivity, or reset your password.
Camera denied: go to device settings → FlavDex → enable Camera for barcode scan.
Barcode not found: try better lighting; if still missing, add the item manually or with a prefill.
App feels slow: close background apps; check for updates; poor connectivity can slow uploads.
